Ingredients

  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 225g caster sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 225g unsalted butter, softened
  • 100g dark chocolate, melted
  • 300g chocolate frosting
  • 1 pack of chocolate fingers
  • 1 pack of Maltesers

Equipment

  • 2 x 20cm round cake tins
  • Electric whisk or stand mixer
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4.
  2. Grease and line the cake tins with baking paper.
  3. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder.
  4. Add the caster sugar, eggs, butter and melted chocolate to the bowl and beat with an electric whisk or stand mixer until combined.
  5. Divide the mixture evenly between the two cake tins.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
  7. Leave the cakes to cool in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once the cakes have cooled, spread the chocolate frosting over one of the cakes with a spatula.
  9. Place the other cake on top and press down gently.
  10. Decorate the cake with chocolate fingers around the outside and Maltesers on top.
  11. Leave to set in the fridge for at least an hour before serving.

  • This cake can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Make sure the cakes are completely cool before frosting, or the frosting will melt.
