- 10-12 medium-sized apples
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tbsp of lemon juice
- Sugar or honey (optional)
- Cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)
Equipment
- Canning jars with lids and bands
- Canning pot with rack
- Jar lifter
- Large pot or saucepan
- Apple peeler and corer (optional)
Method
- Wash the apples and peel and core them. Cut them into chunks or slices.
- In a large pot or saucepan, add the water and lemon juice and bring to a boil.
- Add the apples to the pot and reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer the apples for 20-30 minutes or until they are soft.
- Use an immersion blender or a food processor to blend the apples until they are smooth. If you prefer chunky applesauce, you can leave some chunks intact.
- Taste the applesauce and add sugar or honey if you prefer a sweeter taste. You can also add cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor.
- Prepare the canning jars by washing them in hot, soapy water and sterilizing them. Boil the lids and bands in a separate pot of water.
- Fill the jars with the applesauce, leaving a 1/2 inch headspace at the top of the jar.
- Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth and place the lids on top. Screw on the bands until they are fingertip-tight.
- Place the jars in the canning pot with the rack and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil and process the jars for 15 minutes.
- Remove the jars from the canning pot and let them cool on a towel. You will hear a popping sound as the jars seal. Once the jars are cool, check the lids for a proper seal by pressing down on the center of the lid. If it pops up, the jar did not seal properly and should be refrigerated and used within a few days.
