You can customize the recipe to your liking by adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. This recipe is also a great way to introduce canning to beginners.

Prep Time

The prep time for this recipe is approximately 30 minutes.

Cook Time

The cook time for this recipe is approximately 60 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 10-12 medium-sized apples
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tbsp of lemon juice
  • Sugar or honey (optional)
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)

Equipment

  • Canning jars with lids and bands
  • Canning pot with rack
  • Jar lifter
  • Large pot or saucepan
  • Apple peeler and corer (optional)

Method

  1. Wash the apples and peel and core them. Cut them into chunks or slices.
  2. In a large pot or saucepan, add the water and lemon juice and bring to a boil.
  3. Add the apples to the pot and reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer the apples for 20-30 minutes or until they are soft.
  4. Use an immersion blender or a food processor to blend the apples until they are smooth. If you prefer chunky applesauce, you can leave some chunks intact.
  5. Taste the applesauce and add sugar or honey if you prefer a sweeter taste. You can also add cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor.
  6. Prepare the canning jars by washing them in hot, soapy water and sterilizing them. Boil the lids and bands in a separate pot of water.
  7. Fill the jars with the applesauce, leaving a 1/2 inch headspace at the top of the jar.
  8. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth and place the lids on top. Screw on the bands until they are fingertip-tight.
  9. Place the jars in the canning pot with the rack and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil and process the jars for 15 minutes.
  10. Remove the jars from the canning pot and let them cool on a towel. You will hear a popping sound as the jars seal. Once the jars are cool, check the lids for a proper seal by pressing down on the center of the lid. If it pops up, the jar did not seal properly and should be refrigerated and used within a few days.

  • Make sure to follow proper canning procedures to prevent contamination.
